District 01 of Little League Baseball and Softball in Nigeria recently organised training for Volunteers in preparation for the Softball Girls’ Tournament. The trainees were carefully selected from 6 schools both private and public.

This was also followed by an Umpiring Course attended by 12 Volunteers who went through special training to take part in future games and tournaments. Mr Sunday Olubo, Nigeria Baseball and Softball Association Umpiring official was on the ground to assist the trainees and impact knowledge.

The United States Consulate General, Lagos supports the organisation of Little League Girls’ Softball in Ibadan by District 01 of Little League Baseball and Softball in Nigeria.

Not less than 12 teams in two divisions are expected in the tournament which will hold from February 15 to 19, 2020 at Obafemi Awolowo Stadium Oke Ado Ibadan. The tournament will be preceded by softball coaching clinic to be facilitated by three Coaches from the US and The Netherlands.

The teams are coming from Ibadan, Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and Akwa Ibom.

LL Nigeria District 01 Develoment Programme opens this week in Ado Ekiti, led by Coach Adekunle Ajayi, District Development Coordinator and Coach Sunday Aina of Ekiti Kete LL. The programme will run for 3 months and is designed to include clinics, trainings, umpiring courses, scorers courses, interleague games, regular games and also prepare teams for the Little League Softball (U12) and Senior Softball (U16) Tournaments scheduled to hold in Ibadan from 13 to 18 December, 2019.

Coach Gerard Hall and Coach Amber Jackson will run one week softball pitching clinic a week before the Softball tournaments. Amber Jackson is a softball pitching Coach from the United States.

The same Development Programme will be launched in Ibadan, Akure and Lagos very soon. The District Secretary, Victor Kayode-Bello, commended Ekiti Little League for taking the lead in pushing the district develoment programme and hopes other will follow quickly.

Ibadan Excellers emerges the champion of the 2019 Little League tournament Major Division having defeated Akure Owena team. Here the team was handed trophy after 5 days of active games that saw it winning in every encounter. Its dominance has become clear, though very humble in victory.
Congratulations to the team from Little League Nigeria and to all teams that participated from Lagos, Ilorin, Akure, Ibadan, Abuja and Ekiti.

It is now time for the league to prepare for regional tournament.

Coaches Gerard Hall and Raymond Thomas visit Splash FM Radio, Ibadan with some district officials where they talked about baseball and softball development at Schools and Community levels. The clinicians were also asked about the prospects for development given the just concluded tournament and clinic, which were sponsored by the United States Consulate General, Lagos. To the gentlemen, the prospect for development is very great and its is hoped that the plan will be begin to materialise as more programmes are executed. Present at the meeting are the following : Commissioner for Sports, Oyo State; Kehinde Laniyan, DA; and Ademola Johnson, ADA.

Reports received from Little League Nigeria indicates that Seven Leagues, represented by 12 teams have so far registered for the 2019 Little League Tournament scheduled to hold at Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, Oke Ado Ibadan from April 12 to 17, 2019.

The breakdown shows that  (4) teams will come from Ibadan, Lagos (1 team), Abuja (1 team), Ilorin (1 team), Akure (1 team) and Ado Ekiti (1 team). However, two all stars district teams, representing two formidable senior baseball divisional leagues, will also feature in the tournament.

Reports further indicates that there is so much pressure on the District from Ibadan, Ilorin, Lagos and Osogbo to enter more teams, a situation that could not be accommodated because resources are limited and may be over stretched. Consequently, the district administration is working on alternative to make more children to play and to expand participation during future edition coming up in December 2019 after the second season games.

The following are the leagues featuring in the tournament: Akure Owena, Ilorin GoldHeart, FCT Bwari, Ibadan Acumen, Ibadan Excellers, Ekiti Kete, Akure Oyemekun and Oluyole Plate Burners.

The tournament will be in 3 major divisions: Little League Baseball, Little League Softball and Senior Baseball.

The programme is a partnership between Little League Nigeria and the United States Consulate General, Lagos.

Ms Biodun Jemilat Olanipekun, 40 years old has been appointed Assistant District Administrator, Little League Nigeria, District 01. She will be in charge of corporate affairs and strategy for development of the leagues, teams, players and the whole district which covers, Lagos, Oyo, Ondo, Ekiti, Osun, Ogun and Kogi.

A mother of two, she studied History & Strategic Studies at University of Lagos and graduated in 2004 with second class upper division. She was winner of many awards for service at different leadership and volunteer positions, including the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Service.
She worked with Globacom between 2006-2008 at the Key Accounts Unit of the Sales Department. She had M.A in History & Strategic Studies in 2012, worked as Commercial Manager in Multipro Aluminum City, Lagos. She was also Chief Operating Officer of Embegy Nigeria Limited, a project development company from 2012 – 2013. She is the pioneer Chief Operating Officer of TWC & BAY LTD, a notable aluminum company with operations all over Nigeria, a position she still holds till date.
She is a lover of children and likes to give back to children and community.
